course, updated 1/2005
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 reason for death in the US.
There are many conditions included under the cardiovascular
disease classification, most of which are exacerbated by stress
and anxiety. The most serious medical emergencies during dental
treatment result from this relationship. In 2003 new guidelines
for the diagnosis of hypertension were published which may
impact prior dental management recommendations for providing
elective treatment. New drug products are being developed to
provide for less frequent dosing and fewer adverse drug
effects. Special dental management protocols should be followed
when treating the client with cardiovascular disease. This
course will review the various CV conditions, the drugs used to
manage symptoms, the dental management considerations for the
client and recommendations to prevent potential emergency situations.
OBJECTIVES:
The participant will
1.
Review the pathophysiology of
cardiovascular diseases.
2.
Consider the relationship of stress and exacerbation of a
CV emergency situation during dental treatment.
3.
Identify drugs used to manage CV disease and dental
implications of drug effects.
4.
Describe the actions, side effects and drug interactions
with agents used during oral healthcare.
5.
Formulate management strategies to prevent emergency
situations during treatment.
6.
Consider protocols for resolving CV emergency situations.
