Top Twenty Most Commonly Prescribed Drugs 

The twenty most common drugs prescribed in 2005-2006 will be identified with emphasis on the pharmacological effects, significance to dental treatment and common side effects which may impact treatment or oral health education.  Drug interactions with drugs used in dentistry and dental management concerns due to the disease or the drug effects will be identified.  Interesting information related to comparisons with similar products, warning about the product and information relevant to treatment plan modifications will be highlighted.

 

OBJECTIVES:

1.        List the top 20 drugs and classify into therapeutic categories.

2.        Relate indications for products to relevance to dental treatment plan.

3.        Review rationale for pharmacologic management of disease conditions.

4.        Identify drug action, usual dosage, interactions with drugs used in dentistry and common side effects.

5.        Determine management considerations related to drug indications, drug effects and side effects as they affect the treatment phase and preventive phase of the dental treatment plan.
